Hand Me Down World

Our book chosen by Sarah was Hand Me Down World but unfortunately, our meeting was cancelled due to poor attendance.  We have decided to let our book group members post their comments about this novel on the blog instead.

Our next meeting is June 22 at Sharon's and the book chosen is The Year Of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion.

Thanks!

  1. I have enjoyed this novel but have found it to be a bit fragmented because of the way the story is told. The many voices were somewhat distracting and I found it harder to sympathise with the main character as a result. It is, however, a timely novel that throws light on the current refugee crisis around the world. Sharon

  2. Hi, I enjoyed the novel too. Its a joy to read on one level, wonderful imagery, but the tale is so bleak! The story telling from different characters really worked for me. I was fascinated and I couldn't skip around the chapters like I sometimes do (terrible habit). At the same time it seemed to make sense to me that I would never really come to understand the 'Ines' character, other than to hear about her through the eyes of those who came across her. The whole novel had such a feel of 'otherness' about all the characters. It is keeping me thinking...Thanks for recommending Sarah. Sally
